Mariners Rebound With Wild Win

The Mariners started their home weekend with a tough loss but ended it with a wild win.

The loss came on Saturday to the Sandusky Bay Ice Haulers, who scored nine runs on 12 hits while the Mariners managed just one run on two hits. The Mariners also had five errors in the field. Brandon Green (Southern) had a hit, two walks, and an RBI. Ryan Davis (Undecided) had the other hit, a walk, and scored the lone Mariners run. This was the Ice Haulers’ fourth straight win – a streak where they are averaging 12 runs scored per game.

The Mariners’ offense was on display during the Sunday game, though. Grand Lake had a 6-4 lead after five innings, but they increased the gap in the sixth. Noah Thigpen (Tennessee Martin) hit a two-run home run that scored Marcus Ernst (Ohio State). Later in the inning, Sam Seeker (San Mateo) hit a single that scored Garrett Felix (Bossier Parish) and Brayden Morrow (Tulane). This gave the Mariners a 10-4 lead. The Leprechauns slowly came back, however, adding two in the seventh, one in the eighth, and then three in a crazy ninth inning. This tied the game at ten, and it went to extras after the Mariners couldn’t respond in the bottom of the ninth. After giving up a couple of earned runs in the ninth, Ian Yunker (South Carolina Upstate) didn’t give up any in the tenth. In the bottom of the inning, Brandon Green doubled and later advanced to third. Garrett Felix came up and had the extra-inning walk-off single that scored Green, and gave the Mariners a wild 11-10 victory. Felix ended the game four for six with two runs scored, an RBI, and a couple of stolen bases.

The Mariners are now 3-6 for the season. They begin a streak of six road games before coming back to Montgomery Field on Tuesday, June 22nd. Then they will play four home games in just as many days.
